Wingdings is one of the easiest ways to add a code breaking puzzle to an escape room, scavenger hunt or party game. Players instantly recognise that the symbols “mean something”, nobody can read them at a glance, and yet the puzzle is fair because the key can be hidden somewhere in the room. Here are ten clue ideas, plus tips for making the difficulty just right.

Why Wingdings works for escape rooms

• It looks mysterious but is completely fair: every symbol always means the same letter.
• The key can be a prop. A printed Wingdings chart hidden in a drawer, on the back of a poster or inside a book becomes part of the game.

1. The padlock code. Write a four digit code in Wingdings. Digits become office icons, so 1-9-4-7 looks like 🗁︎🖲︎🗐︎🖮︎. Players need the chart to turn folders, pages and keyboards back into numbers.
2. The torn chart. Cut the printed key into pieces and hide them around the room. Players must collect every piece before they can read the final message.

Practical tips for game makers

• Print large. Many Wingdings symbols have small details, such as the difference between open and closed mailboxes. Print at 24 point or more.
• Test with a friend. Time how long one person takes to decode each clue. Aim for two to five minutes per clue.
• Offer a hint path. A hint card can reveal one letter, or point to the decoder for players using phones.
• Mind the font. If you type the clue in Word with the font set to Wingdings, it prints fine. If you send it digitally, use the translator’s Unicode output so it does not turn back into letters.
