What is Wingdings 3?

Wingdings 3 is the arrow font of the Wingdings family. It was developed in 1990 by Type Solutions, Inc., Microsoft has held the copyright since 2006, and it was distributed with Microsoft Office up to Office 2010. Almost every key produces an arrow: triangle headed arrows pointing in eight directions, arrows to a bar, U-turn and circle arrows, shaded 3D style arrows and plain triangles.

Because the shapes are so similar, a Wingdings 3 message is hard to read by eye. “Hello” turns into ⮄︎🢫︎🡗︎🡗︎🡙︎, which looks like a set of directions rather than a word. That makes it a good choice for puzzles where you want people to need a decoder.

Small letters f to o are simple sans serif arrows, p to { are solid and outlined triangles, and capitals R to X hold keyboard signs such as Escape ⎋︎, Option ⌥︎ and Caps Lock ⇪︎.
