Who is W. D. Gaster?

W. D. Gaster is a hidden character in Undertale, the 2015 role playing game created by Toby Fox. He appears only through rare events, cut content and cryptic messages, and his dialogue is written in Wingdings. His name itself is a pun: “W. D.” stands for Wing Ding, in the same way that the skeletons Sans and Papyrus are named after the fonts Comic Sans and Papyrus.

Players have spent years collecting and decoding his lines, and fans continue to write theories, comics and fan fiction in his style. References to Gaster also appear around Deltarune, Toby Fox’s follow up game.

Why Gaster text is all capitals

Gaster’s messages use the standard Wingdings font with capital letters. In Wingdings, upper and lower case letters are different symbols, so “hello” and “HELLO” look nothing alike: ♒︎♏︎●︎●︎□︎ versus ☟︎☜︎☹︎☹︎🏳︎. To match the game, this page starts with Gaster mode switched on, which turns your text into capitals before converting it.

The best known example is the opening of Entry Number 17, a hidden text in the game. It begins with the words “DARK DARKER YET DARKER”, which in Wingdings looks like this: 👎︎✌︎☼︎😐︎ 👎︎✌︎☼︎😐︎☜︎☼︎ ✡︎☜︎❄︎ 👎︎✌︎☼︎😐︎☜︎☼︎.

How to write and read Gaster messages

1. To write: type your line in the box above. Gaster mode converts it to capitals and then to Wingdings.
2. To read: paste Gaster symbols into the box. The translator detects them and switches to decoding. The result appears in capitals, just like the original text.
