The one rule: use Unicode, not the font
Apps do not let you choose a font for your messages. If you set text to Wingdings in Word and copy it, you are copying ordinary letters that only looked like symbols, so the app shows the letters. What works is copying real Unicode symbols, which is what the Wingdings translator produces. Discord
- Messages: paste the translator output directly. Symbols display on desktop and mobile.
- Nicknames and status: symbols usually work. Keep it short so the name stays readable in member lists.
- Server and channel names: many symbols are accepted, but test first, since some characters may be removed.
- Tip: post a Share link from the translator so friends can decode your message with one click.
- Bio, captions and comments: Wingdings symbols work well and make a bio stand out.
- Usernames: Instagram usernames can only contain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so symbols are not allowed there. Put them in your display name or bio instead.
- Accessibility: screen readers read each symbol by its Unicode name, for example “victory hand, thumbs up sign”. Add a plain text version of anything important.
- Chats and status: paste the symbols as normal.
- Colour emoji: some symbols, such as the thumbs up đī¸, the bomb đŖī¸ or many Webdings pictures, also exist as emoji. Phones may draw them in colour. Keep Emoji-proof output on in the translator; it adds an invisible text-style marker that asks the phone to keep the plain look.
- Old phones: if a friend sees empty boxes, their phone lacks a font for those symbols. Send the share link so they can read it in the browser.
TikTok, X, Reddit and games
The same rule applies: paste Unicode symbols, keep emoji-proof output on, and test a short sample first. Game chats vary the most. Some games only display basic Latin characters and replace everything else with boxes or question marks.
